Moorpark College CS Advisory Committee

Dean Lisa Miller and the Moorpark College CS and CNSE departments invite Computer Science professionals to participate in our yearly Advisory Committee meeting for the Computer Science and Computer Network Systems Engineering departments. The purpose is to reach out to the community around Moorpark College in order to gain your insight and feedback as to what our programs are doing and what they should be doing.

We will begin the meeting by reviewing what our programs are doing and the future plans we have. We then ask that you, who will teach/employ Moorpark students, give us your feelings as to what we should be preparing our students for at the community college level. (This level is the first two years of a bachelor’s degree and/or job training.) What are the trends you see developing that you want students to learn? If you already employ/teach our students, what are we doing right and what can we improve on?

This should be a one hour meeting (until 8 PM). However, if we wish to, we can certainly go beyond this time if you feel that the discussion merits it.

Thank you for considering attending. If you know others who you feel should be at this meeting, please do not hesitate to ask them to contact me. I also ask that you please RSVP to me. We will supply parking passes.

WHAT: Moorpark College CS/CNSE Advisory Committee Meeting
WHEN: Monday March 28 at 7 PM
WHERE: Academic Center Conference Room 221 on the Moorpark Campus

Thank you,

Martin Chetlen

Robots at Flory School

Flory (Moorpark public elementary school) has a new Science Specialist and Principal this school year. These ladies are super excited to launch a robotics program at Flory.  Principal Tammy Herzog and Lynn White want to hit the ground running in their first year at the school and introduce the program to current 4th and 5th graders by February of this year.

This will be a terrific learning experience for these future scientists and engineers. Flory is seeking one-time donations to Flory PTA for the purchase of robots. Can you help make a difference? A financial contribution of 1 or 2 robots would be a terrific help towards our goal of purchasing 28 robots by February 2011.

The cost is $155/kit.  Contact Lynn Darrow at 805-279-1184 or darrowlynn@yahoo.com.

For details, see the Robotics Program Fundraiser flyer.

Cyber-Security at Central Coast Section’s Fall Dinner Event

Botnets, armies of enslaved computers that have been infected with carefully crafted worms or viruses, are responsible for more than 80 percent of the over 100 billion spam messages e-mailed daily. Antivirus programs are often ineffective against them, because the software typically works by scanning a computer for signatures of known viruses – and the viruses that turn computers into bots are often too new for characteristic patterns to have been identified.

Dr. Christopher Kruegel, Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara, will present research and practical applications from the UCSB Computer Security Group showing how this new breed of cybersecurity threats are being countered and destroyed. These threats represent and entirely new level of cybersecurity challenges for today’s Internet.

Dr. Kruegel will demonstrate the approach of taking the “last line of defense” to overcome the shortcomings of current anti-virus software in warding off malware and other cyber-threats. Through case studies and technical descriptions of this new approach, he will also highlight the ramifications of ever-increasing cybersecurity threats in a variety of areas beyond personal use of the Internet, such as healthcare information systems, communications for national defense, and control systems on the electric grid and elsewhere.
